This report details the findings of a research project into the experience and reflections of young people who experienced the break up of their parents’ relationship during their childhood. This research, carried out by University of Glasgow psychology undergraduate Jamie Wark, was carried out during a paid internship that Jamie undertook with us, funded by the Robertson Trust.
This is an innovative piece of research that for the first time asks young people directly about the impact that parental separation had on their own life, with a key finding being that there is a lack of support available to young people struggling with post-separation arrangements.
In April 2022 Jamie’s work in this area for Shared Parenting Scotland was recognised by a Scottish Parliament motion submitted by Fulton MacGregor MSP, praising his research efforts and stating that it underlines the need for parents to co-operate after separation to ensure they act in the best interests of the child.
