The Shared Parenting Scotland effect: 58% have increased contact with their children

To provide context for our work, we send out an annual ‘user survey’ to everyone who has been in touch with us during the year. We’ll publish a full report in the New Year, but here are the responses to the question:  “What progress have you made since you first contacted Shared Parenting Scotland?” Of those who answered the question:

58% report increased contact with their children
67% report experiencing less stress or anxiety themselves
21% have better communication with their children
20% have better communication with their ex-partner
22% have better communication with their children’s school

Shared Parenting Scotland National Manager, Ian Maxwell, says, “Most people who get in touch with Shared Parenting Scotland are already in a difficult place when they make contact. We have no magic wand to fix things. What we can do on our helpline or at monthly group meetings around Scotland is help parents see where they can improve their situation and build their skills for themselves and their children.

There are real problems in Scotland in systems and attitudes that work against co-parenting even though most professionals, politicians and the general public will agree it is better for children if their parents can be helped to work together. That is better than spending money and emotional energy competing with each other for time with their children. We need a change of culture in Scotland that promotes the best interests of children not just this week or this year but into their adult lives.”
