Shared Parenting Scotland Presents at the Family Law Association Conference: Collaboration Over Confrontation
Shared Parenting Scotland was delighted to present at this year’s Family Law Association Conference in St Andrews, where Chief Executive Kevin Kane and Training Manager David Maclean delivered a session focused on a simple but powerful message: collaboration over confrontation!
Across Scotland, family lawyers, the courts, and support organisations like ours meet parents at some of the most stressful moments of their lives. Our presentation Collaboration Over Confrontation, explored how closer partnership, shared insight, and early behavioural support can help parents navigate separation in a calmer, clearer and more child-focused way.
A Shared Commitment to Better Outcomes
We highlighted the evidence that when parents learn practical conflict-reducing skills early, they engage with solicitors more effectively, arrive better prepared for court, and are more able to keep their children’s wellbeing at the centre of decisions.
This is exactly what our New Ways for Families training is designed to do. Adapted from the High Conflict Institute in the USA, Shared Parenting Scotland has the right to deliver it throughout the UK. Through ten structured online modules, with optional coaching, parents gain the tools to manage stress, reduce conflict, communicate more constructively and regulate their emotions during a process that can feel overwhelming.
Family law solicitors tell us regularly that clients who have completed New Ways for Families arrive more realistic, more regulated, and more ready to engage in problem-solving. As one solicitor told us recently: “Referring parents to Shared Parenting Scotland means court-ready clients for us”.
A Strong Partnership Mindset
Reflecting on the conference, our Training Manager, David Maclean, said:
“It was fantastic to be in such a positive learning environment at the Family Law Association Conference. Sharing knowledge and building skills together matters, because no single part of the system can help families alone. When solicitors, support services and training providers work in partnership, we create the conditions for parents to move from conflict toward collaboration and children benefit most of all”
Success of Our Self-Learner Programme
We also shared the recent success of our self-learner online option for New Ways for Families. This flexible pathway enables parents to start immediately, work independently at their own pace and gain the skills that reduce conflict and help stabilise family relationships.
It has quickly become one of our most-requested services with positive feedback from mothers and fathers alike.
