New Visual Guide: How to Submit a Form G6 Motion in the Family Court

At Shared Parenting Scotland we are hearing from increasing numbers of parents and grandparents who are representing themselves in family court proceedings.

Through our helpline and particularly at our in-person meetings (where we are fortunate to have a pro bono family solicitors supporting attendees) one question comes up regularly: how to submit a Form G6 motion in an Ordinary Cause case.

In response, we have worked with supporters and partners to produce a short visual guide explaining the practical steps involved in submitting a Form G6 motion, written in clearer and more accessible language. The guide walks through the key stages, including completing the form, intimating it to the other party, allowing time for opposition, and lodging the motion with the sheriff clerk.

Our long-standing position is that most parents, and most importantly children, are better served when disputes can be resolved outside of court and through cooperative co-parenting. However, we also recognise the reality of high-conflict situations where court processes become necessary.

Shared Parenting Scotland, Chief Executive, Kevin Kane said,

Our aim is to meet families where they are, providing practical information and support when it is needed. Submitting a Form G6 motion is a frequently asked question. We hope therefore that this quick guide helps many mothers, fathers and grandparents better understand the process.

By improving access to clear information, we hope to strengthen knowledge and confidence across the whole family justice system and support families navigating an incredibly difficult period in their lives”.
